La Crosse students can't afford to wait for the economy to improve. That's the message from Representative Ron Kind.
In honor of National Teacher Recognition Week, Kind thanked teachers for the role they play in making sure every student gets a quality education.
He also talked about the economic stimulus plan which is allocating $100-billion for education programs over the next two years.
The La Crosse School District is getting more than $3-million of that.
Kind says this money will help support local schools and ensure kids are getting the education they reserve.
"We're hoping that because of the recession, this money is going to be able to come in and fill the gaps that would otherwise occur and perhaps layoffs in a school district like this which will one hurt our children at the end of the day."
Kind also surprised his 7th grade teacher with a plaque to thank her for the contributions she's given in education.
