Hundreds of millions of federal dollars are helping support fire stations across the country.

Recently, the house passed the 2010 Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Bill which will provide 810 million dollars for firefighter assistance.  Monday, Representative Ron Kind met with local firefighters in La Crosse to discuss the legislation that will help fire departments acquire equipment and training.  It will also help support for the *SAFER* program which stands for Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response.

The firefighters union representative says this money allows fire departments to buy the equipment that saves lives.  Lt. Jeff Murphy, President of the Firefighters IFF Local 127 says, "We need two things to do our job well. We need good equipment and we need good staffing and that involves money on both sides. And if we have fire grants that can provide some of that equipment it takes the pressure off from local government and it allows us to continue our job as well as we do."
