In the past decade, tuition in the University of Wisconsin System has more than doubled. About 110,000 Wisconsin students received government aid in the 2007-08 academic year, yet every year thousands and thousands of students are priced out of higher education. The increasing costs, without a corresponding increase in aid, is making life that much more difficult for students and their families.

In July, U.S. Rep. George Miller introduced the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act, or SAFRA. This bill would increase funds for a lagging Pell Grant program, simplify the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and provide funding to state programs that empower students with financial literacy, increase college access, retention and completion, and facilitate post-completion employment. This summer, the UW-La Crosse Student Association Executive Board passed a resolution in support of SAFRA, as this bill will have direct and tangible gains for students, including increased financial freedom, affordability and accessibility.

Rep. Ron Kind has five comprehensive UW campuses

(La Crosse, Eau Claire, Stout, Platteville and River Falls) in his district. On the congressman's Web site, he writes, "In order to compete in today's global economy, we must ensure that college remains affordable and accessible for all families." I completely agree. Rep. Kind, the students of UW-La Crosse request your endorsement and co-sponsorship of the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act. By supporting Wisconsin's students, you are supporting Wisconsin's future.

Jennifer O'Neill is legislative issues director of the UW-L Student Association.
